What you can drive in Spain without a licence
Spanish regulations (RD 875/2014) let you operate a boat with no nautical qualification at all if it meets all of these conditions:

Within those limits fits much more than you’d think: a 5-metre RIB with 15 hp carries 4-6 people to the next cove with total confidence. That’s why the “RIB + 15 hp” combination is Spain’s best seller.
Why a RIB and not something else?
For the no-licence profile (day trips, little experience, family aboard) the RIB beats the classic launch on the three points that matter:
- Stability: the perimeter tubes make capsizing nearly impossible and cushion pontoon arrivals.
- Passive safety: even if water comes in, the buoyancy of the chambers keeps the boat afloat.
- Error tolerance: beaching knocks, anchoring scrapes… the hull + tube combination forgives a novice skipper’s mistakes.

One nuance: the no-licence limit is 5 m of length, but the sweet spot of price-quality-use sits at 3–3.3 m with 15 hp. More boat only pays off if you’ll really load it.
The 4 classic no-licence buying mistakes
- Buying a “15 hp” engine that’s been de-restricted. A higher-power engine electronically limited must be homologated and documented as 15 hp; otherwise you are legally driving over the limit without a licence. Always ask for the paperwork.
- Forgetting the navigation zone. The 2 miles count from a port or refuge, not from any beach. Check your stretch of coast before planning.
- Ignoring the mandatory safety equipment: lifejackets for everyone, line, bailer, oars, signal mirror… The real budget includes this kit.
